Older houses and new townhomes share streets

Garden City is a small city almost entirely surrounded by Boise, and its housing changes from one block to the next. Older single story houses and manufactured homes sit near new townhomes built close to the river. Each one needs a different kind of cleaning. An older house usually has darkened grout in the tile and window tracks packed with old dust. A newer townhome has more stairs and more glass, with bathrooms on more than one floor.

Skip a few months and those differences start to show. Grime left in old grout sets in, and it gets harder to lift the longer it sits. On townhome stairs, dust collects in the back corner of every tread where an upright vacuum never reaches. Manufactured homes often have vinyl covered wall panels and floors that do not like standing water. A soaked mop or a harsh spray can stain a panel or lift a seam.

So we start by asking what bothers you most about the house. Then the work fits the house. We scrub more where the grout is old. We use less water where the materials are thin. Cottonwood fluff and dry dust get inside

This is dry country. Summers are hot with little rain, and fine dust settles on window sills and fan blades faster than most people expect. Homes near busy roads like Chinden Boulevard and Glenwood Street pick up road dust on top of that. Dust on a fan blade wipes off easily when it is fresh. Left for a season, it mixes with kitchen grease and turns into a sticky film that needs real scrubbing.

Then there are the cottonwoods. The Boise River runs along Garden City, and the big trees beside the Greenbelt drop white fluff in early summer. It drifts in through open doors and packs into window screens and sliding door tracks. Some late summers also bring wildfire smoke into the valley. Smoke leaves a gray film on glass and sills, and a dry duster only smears it around, so it needs a damp wipe.

Winter trades the dust for mud and road grit that come in on boots. Grit is the part that does damage. Ground into a hard floor, it scratches the finish, and on entry tile it dulls the surface over time. So in the cold months we spend more time at the front door. Most of the grit ends up on the first stretch of floor just inside it.

By then it takes a proper scrub to clear.
